no controversy

April 11, 2005 | Uncategorized

Once it gets its sorry butt up there, I’ve got a column on Romancing the Blog today. I think they’re eight hours behind GMT so I guess it’ll be up at about two, my time. I keep refreshing every five minutes, but that doesn’t seem to make it come up any faster. Strange, that.

Don’t expect controversy. I really have so little that is worthwhile to say about “vital topics” in the romance world. I’m much more interested in adverbs, Victorian literature, how to get this damn book written, and why Guy Pearce is so incredibly beautiful.

I interrupted my husband’s bath today to quiz him about what kind of music surfers would listen to. (My husband is a bona-fide muso, and we have the gazillion guitars to prove it.) Beach Boys? Too cliche. Violent Femmes? Too Christian these days. Greenday? Too sad skater boy. Husband suggested ambient, which brings up horrific images of whale sounds to me, though I suppose that’s New Age rather than ambient.

In the end, I decided my hero’s ex-surfer best friend would listen to Sympathy for the Devil. You can never go wrong with the Stones, I suppose.

Again, the path of no controversy. But at least I’ve got a character jumping around singing “Whoo-whoo.”‘

He needs to listen to COUNTRY!! Mind you Woo Hooing is always a good thing :-)

  2. Julie says:

Surfers don’t listen to country, dude.

One day I’ll do a country music fan, I promise you.

  3. Biddy says:

How do you know they don’t? He could be a country music listening surf dude!! *adding controversy to your blog no matter what the header says*

  4. Julie says:

    You’re incorrigible, woman.

  5. Sela Carsen says:

He could surf Key West and sing Jimmy Buffet. Isn’t Margaritaville in surfer country?

    Looking forward to your article.

  6. Sela Carsen says:

And tell Biddy to post something on her blog so I can start harassing her. ;-)

  7. The last surfer movie I saw was the one with Keanu Reeves and the banking robbing surfer gang. I think they listened to rick music.

I grew up in California and although they did play the Beach Boys every summer. The only real Beach Music I heard was when I visited relatives in SC.

In my experience surfers listen to whatever they want to.

Not really much help but I agree country music and surfing probably doesn’t really go toegher. Judst think about what would happen if they got the hat or the boots wet…

  8. I want to echo Sela — Biddy needs to post. I keep checking HER blog and all it is a blank page…

  9. I imagine that the Grateful Dead would fit the bill but then I’m getting old!

    And I am working, honest! But I am allowed a tea-break now and then, aren’t I? :)

  10. Biddy says:

Ok ok I’ll post something!! Sheesh!! Give me an hour or two.

  11. Biddy says:

Post is up! You asked for it :-)

  12. Julie says:

Right. Jimmy Buffet. Now that’s a whole other story. Thanks, Sela.

Biddy, go put something on your blog. Oh, I see you have. Good girl.

Rosie, no tea. Get to work. *brandishes whip*

And I’m not putting the Grateful Dead in one of my stories. I have enough of that shi–er, I mean, fine musical material–in my life as it is. DH is obsessed.

  13. Marc says:

Does he have to be a surfer? Can he be a Cantonese waitress? There is an abundant selection of music for them.
Seriously, though, how about the Pixies? Still got the whole college rock vibe, without the Christian thing.

  14. Biddy says:

I have actually done a little looking for you and here is a link to a page that might help
    http://www.sportplanet.com/ksps/kspsmusic.htm

  15. No, Julie, no, please, not the whip…

    *thinks*

Julie, if you don’t put that whip down right now I’ll bring out the Captain Beefheart.

    *cackles maniacally*

  16. Julie says:

Marc. Ah, a Cantonese waitress. That’s an ideal thing for a man to be.

The Pixies broke one of my first CD players so I am still holding a grudge against them.

Rosie, stop it with the idle threats and get back to work. Go.

  17. Sasha White says:

When I was in South Africa a lot of the surfers listened to dance music, club style. Maybe it was just the country though. *shrugs*
