Ugh. It’s hot (in quite a pleasant, breezy way) and I’m too tired and lazy to do anything. I have done some half-hearted swiping at dust with a rag, watered the geraniums, and bullied my husband to clean the toilet and do the dishes.
I think this is the hangover from yesterday, when I got up full of energy and did a massive sort-out of my clothes, separating them into “maternity friendly”, “will wear again in six months, God willing”, and “will never wear again”. This took up most of the morning and has resulted in piles of the second sort and the third sort still sitting in my bedroom. I have to make a trip to the loft and the charity shop, both of which seem beyond me at the moment.
In the afternoon I bought a dress. Not only a dress, but a non-maternity dress with an Empire waist which will still fit me for the next two months and after the baby’s born (well that’s the idea, anyway–I stuffed it with lots of tissue in the changing room). It is purple chiffon, embroidered with sequins and shells. I saw it in the shop window about a month ago and lusted. Yesterday it was also 1/3 off in the sale. It was like fate.
Then I went to see Superman Returns, and it was BRILLIANT. It was everything I’d hoped X-Men 3 was going to be and wasn’t–character-driven, emotional, beautifully made, with two gorgeous men who lived through the entire film, Kevin Spacey (no slouch himself in sexy stakes) as exuberant bad guy, and a full ten minutes of make-the-hormonal-woman-cry at the end. I really loved it.
Today I am tired, emotional, and surrounded by piles of clothes. I think I’m going to lie down and read Susan Elizabeth Phillips.

It’s hot here too, and I am feeling equally lazy and tired. Difference being, I’m not preggers.
So really, I have no excuse for not going to clean the bathroom right now. *sigh*
Otherwise, I’m glad you liked Superman — I really want to go see it, but can’t seem to find anyone who’ll go with me. I may have to wait and rent it.
Can’t wait to see you soon!
(And your dress sounds gorgeous!)
I loved SUPERMAN RETURNS. I especially liked the ending. It was just, you know, right, I guess. Not too much, not too little. I wish there had been more Clark, though. Superman never did much for me, but I had a huge crush on Clark Kent. There’s nothing sexier than a journalist in glasses who grew up on a farm and is secretly an alien being who gets high on the sun. Or if there is, I haven’t seen it.
And then there’s Brandon Routh with his shirt off. I mean, come on. Where’s the bad?
I never go to the movies anymore cos of the two crazy children I have but I’ve heard good things about Superman so glad you enjoyed it.
It’s miserably hot here too – triple digit degrees hot. We have a pool but I don’t even want to go out and swim – too hot! LOL Talk about lazy…
Yay on finding the purple dress!
Which SEP book are you reading? I love her stuff.
Kris, there is always an excuse not to clean the bathroom.
Ehle, I think you are right. Clark Kent is hotter than Superman. I like men in glasses, too.
Karen, it’s not that hot here–it’s England, after all, so it’s probably about 84 degrees, which is fine in the shade but too hot for a pregnant woman in the sun–but I understand being too lazy to go out and swim. Man, I can’t wait to get to America next week.
Hey Michelle! You posted as I was posting. You know, I just realised the purple dress totally matches my Spirit Willing book cover. That is good accessorising, man.
I’m reading Ain’t She Sweet. I started it this morning and I’m now halfway through. I absolutely love how she gets right inside the head of both the bully and the bullied and makes you see both side’s perspectives, with no judgement but still a strong moral sense of right and wrong. Her characterisation is brilliant.
HI Julie.
Since I only live a few miles away, we share the same weather – and I LOVE IT. And of course we have the perfect excuse for reclining on a lounger reading fiction – this is our job!
Good work sorting out the wardrobe. You are clearly not a ‘horder’ and more of a ‘chucker’. I read ‘Match me if you can’ by SE Phillips on hols and loved it. Great inspiration. Yet to start on Ain’t it Sweet.
Lol. Ray-Anne
If I was able to get into all my clothes again, you will be able to as well. Trust me on this. As I said before you do not want to know how much weight I gained during the pregnancies….
The new dress sounds lovely. I am sure you will look fantastic in it.
Hot weather is made for reading fiction.
I just love ‘Ain’t She Sweet’. Adore the idea of a Byronic English teacher. (What’s the female equivalent?) And EVERYBODY has something they need to put right. Lots of layers and funny and truthful as well. Great book, great choice.
Much look forward to seeing you in launch mode with new book and matching dress. Now what festive liquor comes in purple bottles …? Slivovitz?
I loved the idea of a Byronic English teacher who needs to build stone walls.
I have to admit that I started sobbing from about halfway through Ain’t She Sweet? and didn’t stop until the end. Hormones and emotion don’t mix.
Guess what I’m reading now? Jude the Obscure. I am a masochist…
Jenny, as I will be teetotal perhaps I’ll force everyone to drink grape Kool-Aid.
Brandon did a pretty good job in Superman Returns! But I don’t like the movie. The original was much better.
