I’ve hit Asia!

I got a review for Spirit Willing, Flesh Weak in The Times of India.

The review, while not bad, isn’t exactly a rave one–but who cares?

People in India are reading my book!

Spirit Willing, Flesh Weak

Little Black Dress Books
review by Priya Bala, The Times of India, 7 January 2007

In the genre of rapid read-and-forget romantic fiction, Spirit Willing, Flesh Weak isn’t bad at all. For one thing, Harry Blake isn’t some Italian noble or some such, but a dashing investigative journalist with The Times, who’s lost his job because someone powerful has ‘fixed’ him for being inconvenient.

He has then to settle for a job with Amazing News, which focuses on inexplicable phenomena. Which is how he meets Rosie Fox, an attractive psychic who’s on a seance tour of England. And then she goes and predicts a train crash.

Blake is a sceptic, keen to find out the truth about Rosie, perhaps even expose her as a fake. She, meanwhile, is grappling with her own ghosts even as she helps people connect to the dead.

The two flirt dangerously, making passionate love as well; but getting guy and gal into bed isn’t the core of the plot. Julie Cohen allows the characters to unfold, grow and solve some of their individual moral dilemmas, at least to some degree.

And for this reason, Spirit Willing… is a readable book. And all those moony lovers of mush needn’t worry. It does have a happy ending and long kisses.

  4. I thought it was a pretty good review too, because entertaining someone who doesn’t like the genre you’re writing in is much, much more of a struggle than it is to please someone who’s already prepared to be pleased. If you can manage that (and you did), that’s an impressive achievement!

  5. Congratulations Julie!! I think the reviewer is a sceptic of the genre rather than your book.

Speaking of SWFW – it’s next on my TBR pile (I should be ready to read it next week). I’ll be reviewing it on my Romance Reviewed site and I’m not in the least sceptical of the genre ;-) .
