March 28, 2007 | about me, the web
I seem to be spending more time blogging and commenting elsewhere than on my own blog lately!
The Bookworm on the Net blog has a bit about me today, which I find interesting. The author, Anne Weale, is a treasure of information about the reading and publishing world, though she and I have very different opinions about several things (including the colours lime green and orange).
Anyway, Anne talks about adverbs, buying second-hand books, self-promotion, and whether romance novels are partly responsible for teenage pregnancy. See what you think, and while you’re there, check out the many interesting snippets she has about the book world, including Gordon Ramsay’s bollocks, and how a child’s sweater connects to a multimillion-pound bookseller.

Donna says:
Jules…I just love you. You’re so cool at being you.

Julie says:
Hey, I love you too, man.
Rebecca James says:
Julie - you handled that very well - I would’ve been tempted to say somthing childish and spiteful (which I would later have regretted)But you came across as very smart and reasonable!
Donna says:
And classy.
Kris Starr says:
I’m echoing Donna — you are one classy lady, Ms. Cohen.
Can I be like you when I grow up?
mary beth says:
Grrrr.
What a strange leap in logic. Sometimes I just don’t understand people.
Kathy Love says:
Your writing is intelligent, sassy, entertaining and responsible. And anyone who knows you, knows it’s a brilliant reflection of your talent and of you.
I think your response was definitely well said and classy. Good job.
(Oh, and your website kicks butt too.)

Kathy
Michelle Styles says:
A v classy response.
And your bright and cheerful blog colours always brightens my day.

India Grey says:
As soon as I’ve finished typing this I’m going to run around my house cheering and applauding your dignified, pleasant and kick-ass intelligent response. Nice work Julie!
Jessica Raymond says:
Nicely responded, Julie — and although lime-green and orange aren’t colours I would wear or anything like that, they look perfect for your site.

Julie (()). I suspect you may have been the victim of someone trying to score cheap points off the genre. How novel. Fancy noon having thought of doing that before. Doh! I think a judge would say you have come out of this as the fragrant party. BTW I haven’t noticed any adverb issues in your novels and I have looked carefully, scanning every word thoroughly, scrutinising the whole text meticulously.
Phillipa says:
PS can you put an ‘e’ on that no one please?
Carol says:
I love visiting your blog. I have nothing to promote and do not have my own website. You just cheer me up and I enjoy your writing and take on life.
I thought you responded really well. As we say up here ‘It’s all grist to the mill’.
Trish Wylie says:
Bravo Julie!!!
I laughed at the the website colours issue… betcha Tiffany Lamps were considered garish in their day! So snippets from your website could be a future collectable classic - you just never know! You answered beautifully, and came accross with intelligence and class… And I’d lay odds Ms Weale will search out your book to read the sub-text now…
Because imho that’s what people who want to make a public comment on a book do - they read the damn thing first!
The link from romance novels to teenage pregnancy is just too too ridiculous. Maybe you should have a warning to tell teenage readers to wear gloves when reading them…prophylactic gloves that is….Your books are now officially as dangerous as toilet seats…
Thank heavens no-one takes an aspirin in there too. Just think of the effect you could have on drug abuse!
H’s & K’s (and a bow down to a well handled response from a classy lady)
Trish
Biddy says:
*runs in and tackle hugs Julie* You ROCK!!
suefromdevon says:
Hugs, Julie. But your response was most definitely classy.
Sue
Nell Dixon says:
Hugs, Julie. Anne is Anne and she makes me smile. Congratulations on making her column and handling it so beautifully!
Lynne says:
Clarice Cliff also loved orange and green! I think AW has missed the point that the rest of the world does not strive to be like her! She seems to be totally unable to appreciate other people’s way of doing things,
Lynne.
