day of the living dead

Having gone to bed at 7 pm as usual last night, Fecklet woke up at 10.30 screaming, and continued to do so until 4.00 this morning. There were brief periods of respite when my husband took him downstairs to watch Night of the Living Dead (I kid you not–apparently Fecklet fell right to sleep–odd baby) and when he fell asleep whilst feeding, only to wake up the minute I tried to put him down.

The teething has begun with a vengeance.

Finally I remembered Calpol. Within twenty minutes he was snoring.

At 8 am, however, he was bright and happily awake and has continued so until just now (12.30) when he’s fallen asleep again. I’d like to sleep but I know he’ll wake up soon. So I’ll try to grab a nap if he takes one later this afternoon.

We’ve been very lucky so far, because he’s been a good sleeper at night, since he was born.

Feel like zombie today, though.

  1. baby eczema flares when babies teeth due to a slight dip in their immune system and a rise in body temp. The key is to keep them cool. Use the calpol. You can get teething powders or teething gel to use as well. If he has a temp and his cry is high pitched and his ears seem to bother him get your doc to check his ears just in case he has an ear infection. You can get emollients for his bath on prescription, oilatum or dermabase are good, and you can get the cream for the dry patches on his skin.

  2. Hi Julie,
Have you started Fecklet on any dairy? I’ve heard that eczema can be an indicator of problems digesting dairy. My oldest daughter is allergic to dairy and had bad ecezma as an infant.

    Just a thought.

  3. You can tell the parents of children who do not sleep by their zombie like appearance.

But lol on the horror film trick. Isn’t it just like a bloke? Even at this young age, the fecklet is showing some distrubing bloke characteristics.

  4. Ah, well that makes sense, Nell, because he has definitely been worse the past few days and then this drooling and wailing and chewing thing started at night. Thank you for your advice. We’ve been using Oilatum in his bath, E45 every few hours, and the doctor gave us some steroid ointment which we’re using on the flare-up patches, and it is better already. It’s not a severe case but it’s distressing when your baby isn’t feeling great.

Marcy, he’s 100% breast fed right now, but I’d also heard about a link between dairy and eczema, and although I didn’t have eczema I was allergic to cow’s milk when I was an infant, so I’ve cut dairy out of my diet so as not to pass it along to him. He was better for a while but then he wasn’t, so it’s hard to tell if there’s any link, but I’m carrying on with my soya milk in case.

Michelle, I know, he really is a bloke. He made a little girl cry the other day by coming on too strong and grabbing her hands with his drooly slimy ones.

  6. I used to sleep mine on a special short cut sheepskin and give them homeopathic camomilla when they were poorly. The sheepskin feels divine and just makes you want to snuggle in, the camomilla seemed to work magic too.
Hope you catch up with your sleep soon,

    Lynne.
