we’ve got a reader

May 14, 2008 | parenthood

The Fecklet’s new activity is picking up a book, giving it to me, and sitting himself on my lap ready for me to read it. He does this pretty much ad infinitum, going through his stack of books again and again.

He does have his favourites. I have been reading Dr Seuss’s ABC, on average, five times daily. I am very pleased he’s chosen such a classic work of literature, as I’ve now memorised it cover-to-cover.

  1. So sweet :) I can’t wait until Frog is old enough to do that.

    Trust me, dearest… you’ve only just begun… :)

(And yes, I wholeheartedly agree with you that it makes a difference when the books are good and not completely inane…)

My kids knew I never said no when they asked me to read a book - hence after three of them I can still recite Green Eggs and Ham by heart :-) enjoy!

  4. He has excellent taste…

My son adored The Tiger Who Came To Tea. It got so I could read it to him in the dark, turning the pages at exactly the right time. In fact, given a comfy chair and a snuggly warm small person, I could probably still do it now, twenty years on.

That’s so sweet, Julie! That’s one thing I can’t deny my girls when we go to the store and that’s a book. Older dd is getting into longer chapter books and younger dd is starting to leave picture books behind in order to keep up with sister.

The Fecklet has great taste, by the way! I love Seuss!

Yes, I can say no to a lot of things with my girls but not books. THough I did have a moment of pause when dd1 wanted “Zombie Butts from Uranus”. Butyou know….she was reading that whole series and I could hear her in her room laughing her butt off, and I know the enjoyment is what keeps her reading. And yet…LOL.

They are 10 and 8 and we still read out loud just about every night.

BTW I read Mistress yesterday and loved it.
