img_1292This is a guided retreat, in a lovely setting, where you’ll have time and space away from the real world to write and reflect on your novel. You’ll also have the opportunity to work with me and bestselling author Rowan Coleman to discuss your novel, brainstorm new ideas, and get it ready for submission. On Friday and Saturday evenings there are relaxed group sessions designed to make you think about your writing; in the mornings there are workshops, leaving you free to write in the afternoons. During the weekend you’ll be scheduled for one-to-one time with me or Rowan, to really get to the heart of your novel.

On Saturday night there’s a special guest: agent Lizzy Kremer will lead a session on submitting to agents, and answer your questions about writing and getting published.

This retreat is designed for people who have already started work on a novel and who want to take their writing to the next level. Because we’ll be working so closely with the writers, Rowan and I reserve the option not to accept applicants who we think aren’t quite at the right level for this retreat, or whom we think we’re not able to help. If you’re worried about this—just ask! We are really nice.

The price for this retreat is all-inclusive of accommodation, food and soft drinks, and tutoring, but not for travel or additional extras—for example, wine or any extra chocolate that you might need for inspiration.

Last year’s retreat was a great success, with thousands of words written by the participants, and fabulous discussions by the pool or over a glass of wine. Here are some of the comments from writers who have been on my retreats:

I found my one-to-one with Julie really useful. I really like that she doesn’t just say ‘No, you can’t do that’ or pat people on the head and tell them it’s brilliant. It feels like a genuine conversation about how to develop an idea.

I thought the retreat went really well and the venue, content and organisation were spot on. The balance of group talks and time to write was perfect.

I haven’t met anyone who has been on any of Julie’s courses and not been really thrilled and inspired, and, more often than not, more successful following it.

You feel quite cocooned and sort of protected and I think that’s a bit of magic if people are needing to dig deep to fix their novels, or push on, or just find the wood from the trees.

It was really good to have a mix of people all writing completely different things, as it was very interesting to see what challenges their particular books and genres posed.
